Treasure Hunt

presentation of Treasure Hunt prize

In response to the feedback from Marketing Officer, Claire Bebbington's membership questionnaire, a number of member events were organised this year.

Although some were perhaps not as well attended as the Society would have hoped, they were enjoyed by those who took part.

In addition to guided walks and talks, a devious Treasure Hunt, set in and around Marsden and the Narrow Canal, was compiled by Administrator, Bob Gough.

There was a tie for 'first' place with three different entrants each scoring sixteen correct answers from the twenty clues.

By an 'out of the hat' selection, the Cosgrove family from Marsden were awarded the prize of a Roberts DAB radio.

Pictured above is Mrs Angela Cosgrove with baby Callum (somewhat dis-interested in the proceedings!), Administrator Bob Gough and Chairman Neville Kenyon.

The other entrants in the Treasure Hunt who tied for first place were: Sue & Ian Bradbury and Martin Clark.

The 'Hunt' has caused quite a bit of interest and the Standedge Visitor Centre have asked if a more child-friendly version could be produced for one of their family days in 2008. Look out for this and other events in future issues of Pennine Link.

Bob settles in

The Huddersfield Canal Society's office has now been relocated to its new location at the Transhipment Warehouse, Wool Road, Dobcross.

This is about as near the office could get to the canal without being on a boat!

The builders have been hard at work converting the warehouse into our new headquarters. The lease was finally signed with effect from 1st November, although the move did not take place until February.

The new telephone number is 01457 871800.

There were some initial problems with getting BT and Demon to transfer the telephone and broadband service, which caused the website to be out of action for a time and may have caused emails to go astray.

The space is compact but has been fitted out with a new kitchenette and toilet, smart new desks and a splended table for meetings.

Heavy wooden doors on one side can be slid aside to reveal an outlook across the canal.

New Marketing Officer

Claire Bebbington

The Society has appointed Claire Bebbington to be the new Marketing Officer.

Claire was a marketing manager with a local theatre group and brings with her some useful experience from within the leisure and tourism sectors.

One of her first priorities will be to link up with our partners within the local authorities and British Waterways.

Claire has devised the questionnaire that was included as a flyer in the Winter 2006/7 edition of Pennine Link and looks forward to receiving your comments!

We wish her a long and happy time with us.

Change of Editor for Pennine Link

Alwyn Ogborn

The Society's award-winning quarterly magazine, Pennine Link, is to have a new editor.

After five years at the helm, Brian Minor has decided to step down, mainly because of the travelling distance involved in getting to the Society's office.

His place will be taken by Alwyn Ogborn, already a member of the Society's Council and chair of its Promotions Group.

Neville Kenyon, Society Chairman said: "We are proud of our magazine and have been fortunate in having a succession of committed editors."

Alwyn takes over for the Autumn edition.

Huddersfield Canal on television

A feature onthe Huddersfield Narrow canal is to be included in the next series of the ITV programme Locks and Quays.

A film crew from programme-makers Centini visited the canal in July and interviewed Chairman, Neville Kenyon, who told of the Society's role in the restoration and promoted its attractions to the whole range of its users.

The programme will be shown early in 2007.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal also featured in a recent edition of BBC's Countryfile programme.
