Portland Basin Museum

Portland Basin Museum is alongside the Ashton Canal, half a mile from the western end of the Huddersfield Canal. It includes a recreation of a 1920s street, including house, schoolroom, chapel, pub and shops. Admission is free and it is open 6 days a week but closed Mondays except Bank Holidays. Mossley Industrial Heritage Centre

Small exhibition of artifacts and photos focusing on the woollen and cotton mills of the town and their workers. Situated within the building of Emmaus Mossley, which may also be worth a visit. A short walk from the canal at Lock 13w or Wagon Road Bridge. Open Wed to Sat, 2pm to 4 pm. More information here

Saddleworth Museum

Saddleworth Museum is alongside the canal above Lock 21w in Uppermill. The museum portrays the lives of the people of the area, including Roman soldiers, home weavers, mill workers and canal navvies. Open daily. More information here.

Brownhill Countryside Centre

Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre

Colne Valley Museum

The Colne Valley Museum is at Golcar, a steep uphill walk from the canal at Lock 15w or 17w. The museum is situated in some 1845 weavers' cottages and recreates the life and home of a hand weaver. Bullecourt Military Museum

The Bullecourt Museum is in The Old Drill Hall, Scar Lane, Milnsbridge and is a small military museum, from Waterloo (1815) to the modern day. Details: 01484 461029. Open Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 4pm, and weekday afternoons by appointment. More information here.
